Turning Spanish Class into a Game Show: How to Use “Family Feud” in the Language Classroom
Looking for a high-energy, low-prep activity to reinforce vocabulary and speaking skills in your Spanish class? A favorite go-to game is a Spanish Class Edition of Family Feud, and it’s a guaranteed hit with students from Spanish 1 to AP. Whether you’re reviewing body parts, family members, or themed vocabulary, this PowerPoint-based game gets everyone thinking, speaking, and laughing in Spanish!
What Is the Game?
This editable Family Feud-style PowerPoint template allows you to plug in your own Spanish-language questions and answers based on common classroom themes. Students work in “families,” compete to guess the most popular responses, and build confidence through friendly competition.
How It Works in the Classroom
Step 1: Set the Stage
- Divide students into teams (“families”) of 3–5 students. I usually let them choose a Spanish last name (like Los Ramírez or Los Torres) to make it feel more authentic and fun.
- Display the PowerPoint on the board and have your questions ready to go. You can use the provided themed questions (like “Nombra un miembro de la familia que vive en tu casa”) or create your own based on the unit you’re teaching.
Step 2: Face Off!
- Invite one player from each team to the front for a “cara a cara” (face-to-face) round.
- Read the question aloud in Spanish. The first student to buzz in (or raise their hand) answers. If they get the top answer or a high-ranking one, they can choose to “play” or “pass.”
Step 3: Team Play
- The team that chooses to play takes turns giving answers. Each correct answer is revealed on the slide (click to show each one), and the teacher awards points accordingly.
- If the team gives three wrong answers (strikes), the other team has a chance to “robar” (steal) by offering one final answer.
Step 4: Keep Score and Crown a Champion
- Keep track of the points for each round (each answer is worth the number of points listed).
- After several rounds, announce the winning family!
Why It Works
- It’s immersive. All interaction is in Spanish—from the questions to student answers to team chatter.
- It’s collaborative. Students think together, practice speaking, and cheer each other on.
- It’s flexible. You can adapt the questions to any unit—foods, routines, school supplies, holidays, verbs, even subjunctive triggers!
- It’s fun! The game show format breaks up routine and adds a burst of energy to any lesson.
Tips for Success
- Preload the questions with vocabulary students are familiar with.
- For lower levels, model sentence frames (e.g., “Yo digo que…”, “Creo que…”).
- Use the opportunity to review common errors or cognates.
- Consider having a student be the “host” for an added speaking opportunity.
