French greetings are a crucial part of French culture and are used frequently in both formal and informal settings.

In this guide, we will walk you through the most common French greetings, their appropriate usage, and provide you with some basic French vocabulary to enhance your conversations.

Learn French Conversations for Beginners: Essential Vocabulary

  1. Bonjour – Hello

The most common French greeting is “Bonjour”. It is used to say “hello” or “good morning” and can be used in both formal and informal situations. It is appropriate to use this greeting any time of day until early evening. After that, you can switch to “Bonsoir”, which means “good evening”.

  1. Comment allez-vous? – How are you?

“Comment allez-vous?” is a formal way of asking “how are you?”. It’s important to use this phrase in formal situations such as business meetings, interviews, or when greeting someone you’ve just met. If you are addressing a friend or family member, you can use “Comment ça va?” instead, which is more informal.

  1. Je vais bien – I am fine

The response to “Comment allez-vous?” is usually “Je vais bien”, which means “I am fine”. If you’re not feeling well, you can say “Je ne vais pas bien”, which means “I am not doing well”.

  1. Et vous? – And you?

“Et vous?” means “and you?” and is a polite way to continue a conversation. It’s often used in response to “Comment allez-vous?” or “Comment ça va?”.

  1. Je m’appelle – My name is

Introducing yourself in French is important in both formal and informal settings. To do so, simply say “Je m’appelle” followed by your name. For example, “Je m’appelle Pierre”.

  1. Enchanté(e) – Pleased to meet you

When meeting someone for the first time, it’s polite to say “Enchanté(e)” which means “pleased to meet you”. The word “enchanté” changes depending on whether you are male or female. If you are male, you say “enchanté” and if you are female, you say “enchantée”.

  1. Ravi(e) de vous rencontrer – Nice to meet you

Another way to express that it was nice to meet someone is to say “Ravi(e) de vous rencontrer”. This phrase can be used in formal and informal situations and is a nice way to express that you enjoyed meeting the person.

  1. De quoi vous occupez-vous? – What do you do?

If you want to ask someone about their profession, you can use the phrase “De quoi vous occupez-vous?” which means “What do you do?”. This phrase is more formal and is appropriate in professional settings.

  1. Je suis – I am

To describe your profession, use the phrase “Je suis” followed by your profession. For example, “Je suis avocate” means “I am a lawyer” and “Je suis ingénieur informatique” means “I am a computer engineer”.

  1. C’est un plaisir de vous rencontrer – It’s nice to meet you

Similar to “Ravi(e) de vous rencontrer”, “C’est un plaisir de vous rencontrer” is another way to express that it was nice to meet someone. It is commonly used in both formal and informal situations.

French Meeting and Greeting: Your Turn!

  1. Use the glossary and vocabulary list for any words and phrases you might not know.
  2. Learn to have the conversation yourself. When you know enough words and phrases, you can create with language. Until then, you need to acquire and/or memorize these words and phrases to build. Do this with another person or on your own.
  3. Have the conversation yourself. If I am working independently, I like to write this out in a journal. I like to test myself by not using any aids or help. I then fill in my gaps. If you don’t feel ready to do that, use the conversation as a framework to create your own.

We live in the most exciting time to learn a language, and it is getting more exciting every day.
