How are you in French: Conversations for Beginners

Welcome to Everyday French Conversations for Beginners Week 4 Episode 2. We’ll repeat common greetings including ‘How are you’ in French.

In today’s lesson, we’ll talk about making plans with a friend. When people meet up with their friends, there are always things to do in Paris: a movie, a new art exhibition, or theater. London and Paris have great mixes of culture. There are smaller restaurants with young creative chefs that don’t have to be expensive. It’s easier to go out but cheaper to cook at home.

(04:30) Dialogue in French, making plans with a friend.

(05:20) Breaking it down. We started with a common greeting. How are you doing? To a friend, you’d say it differently or use the shorter version. “Really, really well, thank you.” I hope I’m not disturbing you. “Oh no, not at all. I was just reading the newspaper.”

(07:05) I was just cleaning. I was just watching TV. Do you want to go to the movies this evening? Do you want to go…? To the movies? This evening?

(08:00) We’re playing (the cinema is showing) Strike with a Kitchen Cloth. “Thank you, but I went last week.” (Spoken in masculine and feminine variations.) Oh, that’s a shame. What did you think of it? (Asked informally.)

(09:45) “Excellent. If you want, we can go see the last film if you want.” We can go see the last film.

(11:00) Okay. What time? “The show at 8:30. It’s playing at ____ (a famous area of Paris). We can meet up at the café next door around 7:30.” That’s a good idea. Until tonight, then.

(12:48) A run-down of some words and phrases: I hope… Not at all. I was… To be “just” doing something… To read… The newspaper. Evening, or night. Last. A show or session. To meet up. Then.
