Spanish Lessons: Teaching Clothing Vocabulary
Teaching clothing vocabulary in Spanish is one of my favorite themes. These lessons are fun, interactive, and full of opportunities for immersive comprehensible input and communicative activities. The following plan outlines activities based on a lesson bundle (or curated visuals from stock image sites).
Day One: Introduction to Clothing Vocabulary
- Contextual Introduction
Walk around the room and talk about 2–3 items individual students are wearing. This provides a natural and engaging introduction to clothing vocabulary. - Presentation and Vocabulary Introduction
Use a visual presentation to introduce key vocabulary. Keep it brief but clear. - Verb and Vocabulary Quizzes
Conduct a vocabulary quiz using 6–8 words from immersive CI visuals. Here’s how:- Introduce 1–2 words at a time. Have students identify them by pointing, giving a thumbs-up, or walking to the board.
- Stick the words on the board with adhesive as they’re identified.
- Conduct a speaking activity where students say each word aloud.
- Move on to a written activity:
- Number papers based on the pictures displayed. Say a word, and students write the corresponding letter under each picture. Review answers together.
- For a reading quiz, write words next to the pictures and have students match the letter to the word.
- Lastly, erase the words and ask students to write the correct word for each picture.
- Puzzles
Wrap up with clothing or color-themed puzzles to reinforce vocabulary.
Day Two: Interactive Practice and Games
- Contextual Conversations
Continue discussing what people are wearing to reinforce vocabulary in context. - Guess Who? Game
Play a version of Guess Who? Students sit down when they realize you’re not describing them. This is a fun, daily game during this unit. - Clothing Vocabulary Quiz
Conduct another vocabulary quiz to reinforce the words introduced. - Games
- Clothing Bingo: Use printed bingo cards and calling sheets for a fun review.
- Go Fish: Print double sets of vocabulary cards for groups of 4–5 to play.
- Post-It Challenge: In small groups, students write down as many clothing items as they can on Post-Its and stick them to a designated area. Set a timer to add excitement.
- Dress-Up Activities
- Gather clothing items (thrift store finds, donations, or old items from home).
- Create scenarios where students “dress” for specific weather conditions. For example, describe a snowy day, and they select appropriate clothing from the pile.
- Teams can quiz each other on vocabulary, and if a student doesn’t know the word, they wear the item. Take pictures for fun and to use as conversational prompts later.
Day Three: Repetition and Fun
- Revisit Day Two Activities
Repeat the quiz and games like Go Fish and Bingo to reinforce vocabulary. - Drawing Activity
- Students draw items of clothing as you describe them.
- Pair students to describe clothing to each other while their partner draws.
Repetition through games and creative activities is key to language retention.
Day Four: Vocabulary Quiz and Fashion Show
- Immersive Vocabulary Quiz
Conduct a vocabulary quiz using visuals. - Fashion Show (Desfile de Moda)
- Students work in pairs to prepare a simple “fashion show.”
- Each student describes their partner’s outfit aloud, focusing on vocabulary and grammar.
- Encourage students to perform without notes for confidence building.
Day Five: Quiz and El Mercado Simulation
- Final Vocabulary Quiz
Wrap up any remaining vocabulary with one last quiz. - El Mercado Simulation
- Students set up a “market” using clothing items brought from home, from the classroom stash, or drawings of clothing items.
- Spend one class period preparing: students create signs, practice vocabulary, and rehearse buying and selling dialogues.
- On the second day, students role-play as buyers and sellers, using their clothing vocabulary to simulate a Spanish-speaking market.
Final Notes
This structured unit offers a mix of repetition, creativity, and immersion. Through quizzes, games, and role-playing, students gain a solid grasp of clothing vocabulary while having fun and developing their confidence in Spanish.Spanish Clothing Lessons Unit
