Welcome back to French Conversations for Beginners; Episode 2. Today, we’ll learn basic words and phrases in French about renting a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re looking to rent an apartment in France, you’ll need to know several important things. You have year-long contracts, and big deposits, such as a two-month security deposit and one month deposit as a fee. The landlord need that money for the cleaning fee. Renting is competitive in Paris. You may make an appointment to rent a flat and wait in a queue of 20 to 50 people. Leon has a less competitive real estate market than Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(05:35) Recap and breakdown of the discussion. “Ah, here you come. I was waiting for you.” Excuse me, I am a little bit late. I had an appointment. “That’s not important. Let’s visit the apartment. Here’s the entrance.” Isn’t there a closet\/pantry? “No, but you can install a cupboard.” Oh, good. “And the kitchen is over here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(08:20) “There are no appliances. No, but there’s gas with a boiler. You also have a place to put a stove and a fridge.” Here’s the bedroom and living room. “It’s not very big, but it’s charming.” Yes, it’s a very elegant listing. “What’s the rent, exactly?” 2000 euros per month plus management charges. Most building in Paris have a concierge on the ground floor and cleaning services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(11:10) “How much do I have to put down?” You have to pay two months security deposit, a month of commission to the agent, plus one more month in rent. (Four months total.) “Oh my God, that’s a lot, but I’ll get it anyway.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(12:50) Reviewing the vocabulary. Temporary. To long for. To settle down. Permanently. Advertisement. Real estate agent. Building. I was waiting for you. I had… Entrance. Closet. Wardrobe. To install. This way. Equipped\/fitted. Kitchen. Boiler. Place\/room\/plaza. Range\/cooker. Refrigerator. Living room. Bedroom. Charming. Historical\/listed\/graded. Exactly. Charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
