Introduction

This activity will help you learn Spanish preterite verb forms by filling in the missing past-tense verbs inside a short set of song lines in Spanish. You will practice conjugating verbs into the preterite while keeping the flow and meaning of the lyrics. Use the word bank to complete the blanks, then check your answers in the provided answer key (in Spanish).

Instructions

Read each line and supply the correct preterite form of the verb that fits the blank. All removed verbs are listed in the word bank in their infinitive form. Try to conjugate them without peeking, then compare with the completed version.

Tips to help you learn spanish preterite

• Spot regular vs irregular: Regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs follow patterns (eg, jugar → jugué). Irregulars like ser/ir (fui), estar (estuve), tener (tuve) must be memorized.
• Listen and repeat: Sing or say the completed lines aloud. Hearing the forms helps retention.
• Use the word bank first as infinitives, then write the correct preterite form before checking the key.
• Make flashcards for the irregular preterite stems (tuv-, sup-, estuv-, dij-).
