Articles in Spanish
Articles help identify and define nouns, telling us whether something is specific or general, and whether it is masculine, feminine, singular, or plural. In Spanish, choosing the correct article is essential for clear and accurate communication because articles must agree with the nouns they accompany. Understanding how articles work builds a strong foundation for speaking and writing in Spanish.
1. Definite Articles (The)
| English | Masculine | Feminine |
| singular | el | la |
| plural | los | las |
2. Indefinite Articles (A, An, Some)
| English | Masculine | Feminine |
| singular | un | una |
| plural | unos | unas |
Use el agua fría (feminine but uses “el” for pronunciation).
Part 5: Plural Forms and Agreement
1. Making Nouns Plural
- Ends in vowel → add -s → casa → casas
- Ends in consonant → add -es → color → colores
- Ends in z → change to -ces → lápiz → lápices
2. Adjectives and Articles
Everything agrees in number and gender:
- los libros rojos / las casas bonitas
